My name is Kelli Wegener, and I am a North School parent who wanted to get the word out about a wonderful running program for BOYS - Let Me Run.  Jenny Higgins, also a North School parent, and I learned about the program through Girls on the Run director, Laurie Dayon and decided bring the program to North.  We are the first and only school in Illinois thus far to participate in LMR!!!  We offered the program this past fall and had 11 wonderful boys participate – it was such a joy to watch the boys as they progressed through the weeks forming new friendships, building self-confidence and acquiring an appreciation for running.   Our hope is to find other leaders in our district to accept the challenge Jenny and I did and start a “Let Me Run” program at your home school.

Let Me Run is a non-profit, curriculum based prevention program aimed at strengthening boys in body and spirit that was founded by a mother of two young boys in 2008.  Their mission is to “encourage boys to stay on track to living in to their full potential by inspiring healthy friend, family and community relationships.”  The power of running and FUN group activities is used to equip boys with tools to lead a balanced and fulfilling life – emotionally, physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.  To read more go to www.letmerun.org  and click on “learn our history”.

A little more about the program:

• 7 weeks in length either
• Meets twice a week
• Practices are approximately 1.5 hours in length
• 2 coaches per 14 boys
• Culminates with a 5K race
• Training session for coaches is mandatory

As coaches, we saw first-hand the sense of accomplishment and pride these boys felt crossing the finish line of (for most) their first 5K!  Our goal is to get the word out about ‘Let Me Run’ and continue to “inspire boys through the power of running, to be courageous enough to be themselves, to build healthy relationships, and to live an active lifestyle.”
